Trying To Stop Quitting
I would consider myself an ambitious person. I always like to pick up and try new things, find ways to accomplish things that intrest me and learn skills that I can see myself applying. I always tend to have one problem though, I am a chronic quitter. I don’t quit outright and I don’t quit in the face of difficulty. I actually quit at the sense of accomplishment. In almost all of my projects I find some way that they aren’t complete. Every time I embark on a difficult project or a hard life goal, there is a milestone or point where I feel like I accomplished something difficult, I feel the sense of achievement, then my motivation fizzles out afterwards.
Some examples to this:
- Gave up on my diet after losing 25 pounds (my half-way point to my original goal).
- Stopped working on my “Hot and Cold” Project after completing the circuitry and code, still needs an enclosure.
- Dropped Elden Ring at the LAST boss fight.
The list goes on, but I’m going to cut it short. I honestly don’t know why the sense of achievement doesn’t provide me more motivation to continue. I think its partially because I am so used to short form content and quick dopamine hits. Also because I either see exactly how I am going to complete the rest, or have no idea how I am going to complete the rest. I decided that I need to go back and finish these things I was working on and I’m starting with this blog post. It is also something I didn’t do last Saturday, since I felt accomplished after deploying the website. A part of this that is so frustrating is that I end up quitting the projects I am the most motivated to create and end up accomplishing the things that I am forced to make, like school projects. I’d like to think that the quitting problem isn’t exclusive to me so I am going to look up other strategies that people try. However I also find that other strategies can never compensate for the raw the discipline and perserverance it takes to finish what you start. So I am going to start by wholy dedicating myself and finding the conviction within me to start again and to keep going. If I do accomplish anything I will make another blog post one month from now writing it out, I should be able to get a lot done.
